Introduction

Thank you for signing up to our Tuning Course! Your presence here shows your readiness to learn how to custom-tune your very own Volvo. In this course, we’ll cover everything you need to know to adjust your car’s ECU, specifically the Bosch ME9. We’ll also touch on important topics such as Volumetric Efficiency, duty cycle, and more.. Just a heads up, this course assumes you have a basic understanding of how car engines work. If you’re not quite there yet, don’t worry – we’ll point you in the right direction (more on this later).

COURSE STRUCTURE

We’ve designed this course with flexibility in mind, catering to both beginners and those seeking more advanced knowledge. Our survey results indicated a strong interest in both basic and advanced courses, with some participants preferring to delve deeper than others. To accommodate these varying needs, we’ve structured the course into two distinct levels: “Novice” and “Advanced”.

The Novice level provides everything you need to start tuning your vehicle. You’ll be able to adjust boost, VE maps, ignition timing, and target fueling. The main limitation when tuning at the Novice level comes from your hardware limitations and the ECU’s built-in protections.

The Advanced level enables you to fine-tune your vehicle further. This level includes discussions on how to override the ECU’s built-in protections, allowing you to push the limits of the ECU. You’ll also gain access to exclusive features of our software and have the option to purchase add-ons that require the Advanced level.

Your chosen level will determine what you can access in the course and the software you’ll use. This structure allows you to sample the course at a minimal cost and decide later if you want to delve deeper.

In addition to the core content, we’ve separated some special features like “Burbles and Crackles”, “2-step”, and “Fuel Injector, Ethanol” mods as optional add-ons. This way, you only pay for what you truly need, keeping costs down for those who prefer to stick to the essentials.

FLOW OF THE COURSE

As previously mentioned, this course is organized into groups and clusters. The two primary groups are “General Information” and “Tuning”. (There are also additional sub-groups depending on your level and chosen options, but these are the main ones.)

The “General Information” group provides instructions on how to install and use the software, create and interpret datalogs, understand the basics of tuning, and more. It also includes recommendations for upgrade parts.

The “Tuning” section delves into the three main aspects of ECU tuning: “Air and Boost”, “Fueling”, and “Ignition”. It also covers different types of maps, providing explanations and suggestions for each.

Initially, you’ll likely spend a significant amount of time in the “General Information” group to familiarize yourself with the basics. As you progress, you’ll find yourself navigating directly to the “Tuning” section more often.

CONTENT

This course is designed with a non-linear flow, allowing you to navigate between sections as you please. This approach mirrors the tuning process itself, which doesn’t follow a strict step-by-step procedure. For instance, after tuning your vehicle’s fueling, you might decide to adjust the boost profile. This change could affect your fueling, necessitating another round of adjustments.

Given this fluid process, we’ve organized the course into clusters rather than traditional chapters. We believe this structure more effectively delivers information, reflecting the non-linear nature of tuning. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with all the information in the knowledgebase to get a sense of the course topics and identify areas where you might need to spend more time. Remember, every learner’s journey is unique.

To consolidate your learning, we’ll provide a step-by-step tutorial at the end of the course. This tutorial will guide you in creating a Stage 1 tune, allowing you to apply all the knowledge you’ve gained.

What to Expect?

Our course is unique because it’s designed specifically for P1 Volvos. Unlike other courses that teach broad tuning principles for any car, our course focuses on these particular vehicles. The software and files we provide are created for these cars, so they might not work with other models. However, the knowledge you gain could still be useful for other cars that use the Bosch ME9 system. Just keep in mind, the software won’t work with them.

The hardware supplied for this course is of professional-grade quality. These tools are potent and typically reserved for individuals with specialized knowledge. In the hands of an untrained user, they could inadvertently cause damage to the car’s ECU. However, rest assured, we will provide comprehensive instructions on their proper use.

Similarly, the software we provide is proprietary and exclusive. You will gain access to software that is not readily available, even to some professional tuners. Additionally, we will provide you with binary definition files—these are closely guarded secrets within the tuning industry. Given the sensitive nature of these tools, we entrust you to protect them and refrain from indiscriminate distribution.

How to get started?

We understand that things can seem daunting at first, but don’t worry, we’re here to help.

The first cluster we suggest you start on is “The Basics” cluster. Here, we will discuss about the engine and the ECU. More importantly, we’ll cover the terminologies used throughout the course, so it’s best to get up to speed with these concepts.

We know it’s exciting to get new tools, but please, set the hardware aside for now. We’ll get to that soon enough.

Next, head over to “Tuning Introduction”. This cluster covers important information about tuning, including best practices, common pitfalls, and issues you might encounter. While it’s designed with beginners in mind, we strongly recommend going through this section even if you’re experienced.

After these two clusters, you’ll have a better idea of how you want to approach the course. Some might prefer to dive straight into the “Tuning” group of clusters, while others might start with the “Datalogging” cluster to familiarize themselves with datalogs. Either way, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process. Remember, the joy of tuning lies in the journey, not just the destination.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Throughout our guides and documentation, you’ll encounter various note blocks. These provide additional guidance and are color-coded for your convenience.

TROUBLESHOOTING

These blocks contain information reliating to troubleshooting your tune. For instance, these notes would include how a certain map is used to troubleshoot certain issues.

CAUTION!

These blocks contain crucial information that you MUST READ before attempting to modify any map. They cover critical points and potential dangers.

TUNER TIPS

These blocks offer tips and tricks from us, such as our best practices, how we troubleshoot issues that may arise, and what to watch out for.

HOMEWORK

For beginners, these blocks provide links for further study about tuning. For example, if we’re discussing volumetric efficiency and you’re having trouble understanding it, these blocks will contain links (both internal and external) for further information.
